Restore files from windows xp backup to windows 7

I had to sacrifice the Win7 workstation and install Server just to restore some files. I then could mounted the 1. Of course, now I have to go backwards and setup that Win7 station from scratch. One would think that Vista, Win7, Win8, Server , and Server would be able play in harmony and at least restore each others files like the trusty old NTbackup could.

I'm guessing there is some difference in the XML files each program creates to prevent this possibly on purpose or just yet another gross oversight in design of these backup programs What should have taken an hour cost me four hours of fussing around, missing yet another dinner and time with the wife and kids, and will cost another 3 hours to restore the Win7 workstation I had to sacrifice.

It would be great if there were some app you could download that could read all Windows Backups and simply let you have your way with your data and restore it to network shares or where ever you want! In a modern digital world you would almost expect this, but what we get is yet another pass at reinventing the backup with Windows 8!!!.

Any recommendations on how to restore files from a large Windows backup VHD from another Windows version? Currently I cannot reproduce the steps as I cannot create a 1.

As it could be attached, it should not be caused by the size limitation somewhere mentioned that VHD larger GB cannot be attached. I'm thinking if there is any specific reason of VHD created by Windows backup. Email Format html text. GrapeVine Productions. Hardware Support Detailed information coming soon! Jeanne Sakata. Acorn NMR, Inc. Livermore, CA Where did you find the NTBackup Restore utility and did you download the correct version x86 or x64 for your Windows 7 computer? It sounds as if you downloaded and installed the Vista version, which does require the Removable Storage Manager -- which isn't available in Windows 7. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. Copy these files from XP to the folder created above put them all in the same folder, there is no need to preserve the folders that XP uses.

Your initial question refers to Windows 8 but subsequent text always refers to Windows 7. It doesn't matter which you are using. You will be warned that removable storage is not running, ignore this - tick "Do not show Then you will be able to do a restore using ntbackup. You will need to catalog your bkf file first.

You might also want to consider using the option to not restore security. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread.
